The Lathrops had always introduced him as "Dr. Philpot," so Coralee had come to assume that the tall, square-headed man was indeed a physician, an osteopath, maybe, or a chiropodist, given the familiarity he evidenced with body mechanics (and feet in particular), whenever she spoke with him at the gymnasium downtown, where he seemed to spend a great deal of time, none of it spent exercising that she could recall, although his palms were always moist and there generally appeared to be a haze of perspiration ready to condense above his eyebrows.
